Chewy Chocolate Rawnola

I love the crunchiness of the toasted oats, nuts and seeds of traditional toasted granola. However, I also love the chewiness and stickiness of dates and muesli bars. So I’m very happy to have come across the idea of rawnola, which is the chewy (but still slightly crunchy) cousin of traditional crunchy granola.  Unlike granola, the base ingredient for rawnola is sweet and sticky dates so rawnola doesn’t require added oil or liquid sweetener, and it doesn’t need to be baked.

Ingredients

  • 110g pitted Medjool dates (~7 large dates)
  • 1 cup/100g wholegrain rolled oats
  • 50g crushed unsalted peanuts
  • 50g sultanas
  • 30g desiccated coconut
  • 25g cacao powder
  • 30g (1 scoop) chocolate protein powder (I use Dymatize Nutrition Iso-100 Gourmet Chocolate)

Method

  • Step 1: Soak the dates in boiling water (just enough to cover them in a bowl) for 2 hours. They should have absorbed some water and be very squishy
  • Step 2: After 2 hours drain the remaining water and add the dates to a food processor. Pulse 3-4 times to blitz the dates
  • Step 3: Add the rest of the ingredients to the food processor. Try to spread each ingredient evenly around the mixture.
  • Step 4: Pulse all ingredients for about 15-20 seconds to combine until the mixture comes together into clusters; it will look like a crumble (keep an eye on the texture, you don’t want to over process it*). You may need to scrape down the sides once as the dates may stick to the sides initially
  • Step 5: Transfer the mixture with a large spoon to an airtight container and store in the fridge (try not to squish the clusters together and make sure the container is big enough that the mixture doesn’t need to be compacted, as this will make it stick together).

*If the mixture is over processed all is not lost! You can simply roll it into bliss balls, if it is too dry just add another date or two and blitz it again until it is the right texture for bliss balls =)

Makes 10 x 45g servings.  Per serving:

  • 156 calories
  • 5.9g fat
  • 19.7g carbohydrate (11.1g sugar)
  • 6.1g protein

To up the protein content of the rawnola you could substitute the cacao with a second scoop of chocolate protein powder.  That would change the macros per serving to: 158 calories, 5.7g fat, 19.3g carbohydrate (11.2g sugar), 7.9g protein.

I love granola/rawnola with yoghurt, on top of pancakes or nice cream, or just as a snack to nibble on (like trail mix).
